When I think about fashion-meet-politics, I often think back to the embarrassing actions of P. Diddy and his “Vote or Die!” slogan. Seriously, it did more harm than good (and having Paris Hilton and 50 Cent be your models doesn’t help you out either, Mr. Combs). Suffice to say, I was skeptical when I found out that several designers pitched in to support Obama in what is being named ”Runway for Change“. Yet upon clicking the link I found myself quite impressed by the turnout: everyone from Pharrell to Vera Wang came out to play. I particularly liked Pharrell’s shirt ($60), Nanette Lepore’s Hope Anchor Tee ($65), and the Marc Jacob tote ($75) yet had some very serious beef with some of the other designers, of whom I expected so much more.
To start off, Isaac Mizrahi’s bag ($80) looks like a someone jacked a whole stock of Mizrahi’s for Target signature bags, got some iron-ons, and slapped on Obama’s logo for a finish. In fact, I would just cut out the middle man and say if you DO want that look just go to Target and have a DIY field day. And you know those g-ma bags? The ones that they tote around to the beach with an all-over print that reminds you of your art project in the 1st grade? If you haven’t the search is over: presenting Diane Von Furstenberg’s Obama 08 Love Tote Bag ($75). I can’t look at this bag without thinking of saggy boobs on the beach and little kids getting their hands on Crayola crayons. Alexander Wang’s white tank also set fire to my eyes, but this stems more from my hatred of this trend where we all pay $45 for a plain tank/tee with big, bold words of no particular meaning on it. Why people why? Maybe in this instance the use of “Change” works with Obama’s message, but tweens wearing shirts that proclaim they’re baller? Not so much. Of course, last but not least comes Juicy Couture’s T-shirt ($60), which proudly and obnoxiously proclaims “Dude, Where’s The Hope?” in the good old red, white and blue. Leave it to the brand 90210 bumpkins love to put out something so el-o-el (or what I like to call, cricket-inducing humor).
All-in-all, a step up from the days of P.Diddy, but with some obvious mis-steps. Let us hope Obama will have learned from P. Diddy and not go around wearing his own slogan. Anyone end up buying something? Pimp out your political gear and hit me up in the comments.
