Yo Christmas, Hold Up! Thanksgiving is in the House!

thanksgiving-cat_dogEach year you always seem to hear, “Christmas starts earlier and earlier.”  I don’t know if I ever noticed that to be true, until this year.  As a demographic who is either still on mommy and daddy’s paycheck or can apply for those magical pieces of plastic that make you part of this statistic, college students are a highly targeted group for retailers.  Christmas is already bleeding through the crack between Halloween and Thanksgiving.  The bells and merry cheer are slowly working themselves into each and every commercial break I see.  Listen Christmas, I like you just as much as the next Jewish guy, but move over, Thanksgiving is a great holiday.

I just took a quick office poll here and over 75% of the (willing) participants agreed that Thanksgiving was one of their favorite three holidays.  I understand that Thanksgiving is not a big retail holiday, unless you have a Poultry Pollyanna, but just wait a minute, there is plenty of marketing to be done for this splendid holiday.

Thanksgiving offers a plethora of food staples, so start there.  Commercials with Turkeys in shackles headed to the feathery genocide that is to come?  Perhaps an ad featuring Mr. Potato Head with a horrid look on his changeable face as all of his relatives get mashed?  Or even a nice public service announcement with Indians, no excuse me, Native Americans, and pilgrims chowing down on some turkey and pumpkin pie together?

So listen, Christmas, everyone knows when you are.  Start treating your neighbor Thanksgiving with more respect.  Its like you fill a brown bag with dog poop, light it on fire, put it on Thanksgiving’s porch, ring the doorbell, and run back to your house.  Be a nice neighbor, maybe bring Thanksgiving some Turkey shaped cookies (not turkey flavored cookies).

Do you love thanksgiving as much as I do?  Let me know below…
