Cheesy Good Fun: Top 5 Halloween Costumes for Couples and Then Some

Tue, Oct 7, 2008 by Lisa - Carnegie Mellon

Buzz, Style

Fall is in the air, scarves are in season, and Halloween is coming up.  Even the people who don’t get out much can see that much is true either by the influx of Pumpkin-themed articles floating around online or the less stealthy way: checking the calendar.  In any event, while most people who’ve moved on from High School may feel too old to dress up, I say NAY, if anything grown-ups have more options than a cowboy and a witch.  Couples especially, can have a little bit of extra fun coordinating costumes, and I’m here to tell you my top picks:

grease15. Danny & Sandy from Grease

Couples dressing up like other couples!  How cheesy and yet awesomely so.  Who doesn’t remember Olivia Newton-John’s famous transformation from shy cheerleader to sexy biker chick?  If you longed to wear those sky-high heels with the off-the-shoulder top and super tight highwaisted pants here’s your excuse.  Or you know, just wear it to class if you’re feeling particularly Sandy-like.  For some extra laughs fellas have some cellophane.  Couples can probably assemble these costumes with a trip to your local vintage store but you can also check it out here.

The rest after the jump:

4. King Kong and Ann Darrow

kingkongYou always know its true love if a guy will stuff himself into a gorilla suit just so you can prance around in that beautiful Fay Wray dress.  Lets put that to the test shall we?  Just make sure you’re going home with the right primate at the end of the night.  The dress can probably be found in your closet or at the Salvation Army, the monkey suit not so much.  You can check out both costumes for purchase here.  I suggest giving your guy a banana for the effort.

3. Pirates

piratesI half-hesitated with this one what with most of the offerings looking like they came straight out of Pirates (and not of the Johnny Depp kind) but then I thought hey, if you’re into it, go for it.  People can be swash-bucklin’ together!  I like this idea mainly because it becomes a couple costume via the time old tradition of matching.  That way in a drunken haze you can find each other without having to remember who you’re dressed as and what your character’s counterpart looks like, thereby narrowing down who YOUR counterpart looks like.  Most stores have some form of pirate costume, but you can look also at some costume offerings for purchase here.

2. Pimps

pimp

Instead of having a Pimp and his ho theme, how about you both be pimps?  AnytimeCostumes.com has a hilarious idea for a “Adult Pimp Supa Mac Daddy” costume for men and a “Adult Pimp Supa Mama” costume for women.  I think I might even suggest the Supa Mama to my single friends, just so I can say that over and over again.  Of course, you CAN always go for the Pimp-and-Ho thing, but how about us females try not to be the sluttier versions of male costumes for once?

harrypotter1. Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley

This is number one for me mainly because I have been subtly hinting to my boyfriend that he should dress up as Harry Potter, albeit an Asian version.  The hints usually start out with a compliment like “I like your messy hair” and meander over to “you know who else has messy hair like yours?  Harry Potter.”  I’m a master of manipulation right?  Actually it usually dissolves into him admitting he’s never read more than one book, and me crying in a corner at this betrayal.  Nevertheless, where I might fail perhaps someone else will succeed.  And since this is a couples post of course I had to add in Ginny Weasley as the counterpart.  They have normal Harry Potter costumes here and here (although this can be easily assembled on your own), but if girls should want something different there’s always the “Adult Naughty Wizard Girl” costume.  I will suppress my laughter starting…now.

Some other ideas to throw out there if the above don’t do it for you:

  • Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy - Because lets face it, they were gay for each other.
  • Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee - Because lets face it, they were gay for each other too.
  • Plug and Socket - It’s adorable and yet so very wrong.
  • Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask - Even though I thought Tuxedo Mask was a pretentious git, I’d still like to see someone bring this back.
  • Peter Pan and Tinkerbell - Just to have an excuse to wear fairy wings.  I guess the guys would look cute too.
  • Wall-E and EVE - Warning, may make your friends annoyed if you went around only saying Wall-E and EVE (especially to each other).
